FC Columbus vs. Detroit City FC - June 2, 2019
5:00 PM - Keyworth Stadium
Recap:
On Sunday evening, FC Columbus suffered its second setback of the young NPSL season losing 0-3 to Detroit City FC at Keyworth Stadium.
From the onset, FCCLB struggled to gain control of the ball in the midfield as Detroit City FC set the tone of the match early on. Placing continuous pressure onto the FCCLB defense, DCFC tested the visiting sides starting black line with a relentless barrage of crosses into the box. Starting Center-backs Madafing Conde and Joe Brush (Ohio Wesleyan University), along with Goalkeeper David Abonce (The Ohio State University), did a good job to keep the home side scoreless early on.
Breaking on the counter, FCCLB earned its first corned of the match in the 27th minute. Kevin Blackwood hit a ball well to the back post that found the head of Kangni Gabianou, who placed a strong header on goal. If not for a goal line clearance from DCFC’s Stephen Carroll, the visiting side would have claimed a lead against the run of play in the 28th minute.
Late in the half, on a cross into the box, DCFC’s Oscar Gonzalez collided with Demarco Andrews sending both to the ground. It would be minutes before Andrews would be able to get to his feet, forced to withdraw due to a sustained head wound.
Despite the valiant effort by the men from Columbus, the pressure from Detroit City FC finally became too much for the visiting side as Shawn Lawson beat FCCLB Goalkeeper Clay Musgrave in the 56th minute off of a cross in by Kervin Kenton.
It was all Detroit City FC from then on as they again capitalized through the air in the 72nd minute. On a well taken corner by Max Todd, Center-back Moussa Gueye was left alone on the back post for an easy finish into the bottom right corner.
Cyrus Saydee, who had come on just moments earlier, set the final scoreline of 3-0 in the 81st minute with a simple tap in beating a stranded Musgrave.
The loss moves FCCLB to 2-2-3 on the year and 2-0-2 in the Great Lakes Conference. Columbus looks to bounce back on Friday, June 7th as they host Michigan Stars FC for the first time in club history. The match, taking place at Roberts Field - The Wellington School, begins at 7:00 PM. Tickets are currently on sale for $5.00 online.
