FC Columbus vs Detroit City FC - Match Recap

FC Columbus suffered its first loss of the NPSL season to Detroit City FC (DCFC) following an 85th minute goal by Shawn Lawson.

Taking its first away trip of the season, FC Columbus was welcomed to Keyworth Stadium by a raucous crowd of 5,644. Right from the first whistle, the Detroit City FC faithful displayed fervor and an accompanying TIFO that they hoped would rattle the new NPSL club from Columbus.

FC Columbus despite their youth, took hold of the game from the beginning, creating the first real chance of the match in the 4th minute, as Demani Camara was able to force Detroit City FC’s Fernando Pina into his first save.

Both teams would struggle to find footing until the 19th minute when Camara again was able to find enough space on the wing to get a shot off and force a save from the DCFC keeper. Pina’s deflection of the shot, would find a favorable bounce to begin a break by DCFC down the left wing. Running onto a through ball, DCFC’s Danny Decan fired a shot over the bar in the 20th minute.

Columbus would grab the momentum for the first time in the match in the 38th minute, as Camara, again from the wing, was able to unleash a shot that the sailed just over the bar. A minute later in the 39’ after recovering the goal kick, Shakie Diawara was able to get a shot around Pina, but not past a recovering DCFC defender.

The half would come to an end following the booking (YC) of Jonatan “Corro” Alverez for a hand ball that occurred during a sliding challenge ten yards outside of the Columbus box. Alverez would make up for the foul by clearing the ensuing DCFC freekick from inside the wall.

A briskly crossed ball into the box by DCFC saw Le Rouge register their first shot on goal and second chance of the match in the 65th minute.

Following a substitution in the in the 65th minute for Alusine Bangura, Michael Chilton would create FC Columbus’s best chance of the match. Chasing down a ball played over the top, Chilton found Limamou Sow on the back post alone in the 71st minute. With time, Sow was able to finesse the ball past Pina towards the back post where a DCFC defender was able to clear it off the line.

In the 80th minute, Columbus’s John Bain was able to retrieve a poorly played DCFC back pass in the midfield. From there he played on Camara who forced Pina into a point blank save.

DCFC’s Shawn Lawson would find the winner in the 85th minute against the run of play by heading home a redirected cross under the bar.
